The 'Trade for Fun' potion is great - I've used it to learn and to experiment safely. So much so that I felt confident enough to switch to trading for real. I did not expect fantastic results to start off with - and I have not achieved them. I am very realistic about Forex and so am neither surprised nor disappointed that I am slightly down on my small investment. I am still learning and taking things slowly.
However, I think that the Trade for Fun option should also take into account what a trader would pay for positions opened on the Trade for Real option. By that I mean what eToro take by way of commission. I have tested and compared this on both platforms over a couple of short trades (one in which I gained and one in which I lost).
When I gained 10 USD in virtual mode, 10 dollars were credited to my account. In real mode, when I gained 10 USD, 8 USD were credited to my account.
When I lost 5 USD in virtual mode, 5 USD were debited from my account. In real mode, when I lost 5 USD, 7 USD were debited from my account.
I have no problem with eToro earning in this manner for the excellent product that they provide (albeit a little slow in responsiveness at times) - but I do think that it would be fairer and, obviously, more realistic to include these charges in the virtual mode.
